How Demonization Actually Happens: Open Doors, Patterns & Spiritual Discernment

For the past several weeks, we’ve been walking through a series on spiritual warfare and have begun discussing demonization — what it is, how it shows up, and why it matters for every believer who wants to walk in true freedom. Today we’re focusing on how demonization occurs and what it looks like in the life of a believer, and next week we will be discussing how to gain freedom from demonization.
As a reminder, the original Greek New Testament does not use a separate word for demon-possessed and demon-oppressed. Instead, it uses one word that means afflicted by a demon - daimonizomai. Modern-day English translations that choose to use different words (possession and oppression) have caused a lot of confusion around this topic.
When most believers think of demonization, they imagine extreme situations — the demoniac in the Gospels or something similar to The Exorcist. But Scripture paints a very different picture. Demonization happens on a spectrum, and much of it is subtle, quiet, and easily hidden. It often occurs through open doors we may not even realize exist.
The Enemy Works Through Open Doors
Demonization doesn’t happen randomly. It happens through access points — places where the enemy finds legal or spiritual permission to influence, afflict, or torment. The last few weeks, we have used the analogy of a squatter to illustrate demonization. A squatter does not own a home, but if they find an open door or window, they can gain access to a home and will remain until evicted by the authorities. The open doors in our own lives that provide access for the demonic to operate can include sin done to us, sin done by us, or sin done in past generations.
The main thing to remember is that so much of this has to do with our hearts. When our hearts are not in the right place, we will fall into sin or ungodly beliefs, which can create open doors and perpetuate the cycle.
1. Sin Done to Us
Trauma, abuse, betrayal, abandonment, and rejection create wounds in the heart that allow lies to take root. Unhealed wounds often become ungodly beliefs, and ungodly beliefs can become sin patterns that open the door wider.
2. Sin Done by Us
When we willingly engage in sin — especially repetitive or addictive sin — we create spiritual exposure. Scripture warns that sin enslaves and opens the door for affliction.
“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?” — Romans 6:16
3. Generational Sin
Patterns that repeat across family lines — divorce, poverty, addiction, adultery, anger, bankruptcy — often reveal spiritual influences that have never been confronted.
“Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation.” — Exodus 20:5–6
Demonization Happens on a Spectrum
Not all demonization looks dramatic. Much of it is subtle and can be mistaken for “normal life.” It can manifest through tormenting thoughts, emotional instability, or physical affliction that seems natural but has a spiritual root.
Possible indicators of demonization include:
Persistent tormenting thoughts
Repetitive nightmares or night terrors
Sleep paralysis
Cycles of addiction or anger
Emotional instability
Physical afflictions with no medical explanation
Patterns that repeat across generations
Thoughts that “don’t sound like your own voice”
Seeing demonic entities or hearing voices
Paranormal activity
If you start seeing repetitive patterns, that’s where you really want to hone in and pray for discernment. Patterns often reveal spiritual roots.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” — Ephesians 6:12
The Role of Discernment
Not everything is demonic — and not everything is merely flesh. Discernment is essential. We must always ask Holy Spirit for wisdom and the gift of discerning spirits. It is always important to address the spiritual side as well as the practical side through things like a spirit-led counselor.
Two extremes keep believers bound:
Over‑spiritualizing everything (“Everything is a demon.”)
Under‑spiritualizing everything (“Nothing is spiritual.”)
The biblical path is Spirit-led discernment—asking the Holy Spirit to reveal what is flesh, what is trauma, and what is spiritual.
Major Open Doors the Enemy Uses
1. Unforgiveness
Forgiveness is a primary component of the Christian faith. When we refuse to forgive, we are walking in disobedience and open ourselves to torment.
Matthew 18:21–35 — The parable of the unforgiving servant shows that those who refuse to forgive are handed over to tormentors (demons).
2 Corinthians 2:9–11 — Paul publicly forgives so that Satan would not gain an advantage.
2. Anger, Hatred, and Bitterness
Unresolved anger gives the devil a foothold — an inhabitable space (topos in Greek) as highlighted in Ephesians 4:26-27.
“Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” — Genesis 4:7
“Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” — Ephesians 4:26–27
“The devil was a murderer from the beginning.” — John 8:44
“See to it that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble.” — Hebrews 12:15
“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” — Proverbs 14:30
3. Idolatry
Idolatry is anything we place above God — even good things like family, work, or ministry. It can also include participation in practices rooted in false worship, whether we do it knowingly or unknowingly.
“The sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:20–21
“You shall surely destroy all the places where the nations served their gods….. You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way” — Deuteronomy 12:1–6
Today this can show up in idols (statues, carvings) that have spiritual ties, ceremonies, secret societies such as Freemasonry and fraternities/sororities, other religions, and things like Yoga (yes… even “Christian Yoga”). All of which are idolatrous in nature, and our participation can provide access to the demonic.
Before we unthinkingly participate in anything, we need to understand the background of something and what it really is. We cannot simply claim, "Well, we are doing this as a Christian, and therefore it is ok." Take yoga, for example. The word Yoga means "to yoke" with the Hindu god Brahman. Each position of yoga was originally designed as a ritual pose to Hindu gods and is a reenactment of the story of false gods. Just because you slap the label 'Christian" on it does not change the fact of what it is or what its intention is. That is like saying Christian witchcraft, Christian tarot cards, or Christian “spiritual rituals”.
4. Occultic Practices
Seeking spiritual power or encounters outside of God opens the door to demonic influence. This includes witchcraft, astrology, tarot, psychics, and New Age mysticism. The Bible is very clear that we are to take no part in this. Just because there is a spiritual encounter or something seems to work does not mean it is from God.
“Do not turn to mediums or necromancers.” — Leviticus 19:31
“I will set my face against anyone who turns to mediums.” — Leviticus 20:6
“Let no one be found among you who practices divination or sorcery.” — Deuteronomy 18:9–13
1 Samuel 28 — Saul’s visit to the medium of Endor shows the danger of seeking spiritual guidance outside of God.
A big one here is to be mindful of what entertainment you choose. A lot of things today are laced with occult practices, and we accept them as normal parts of entertainment. The majority of kids' entertainment has some spiritual component to it. If you walk into any bookstore or library and go to the kids section, the majority of what you see will be fantasy/magic/ spiritual in nature and has a very dark feel. What we allow to entertain us gains mastery over us.
5. Substance Abuse
Substance abuse can lead to altered states of consciousness, opening the door for demonic influence. The Greek word pharmakeia (translated “witchcraft”) is tied to the use of substances for spiritual experiences.
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: … idolatry, witchcraft (pharmakeia).” — Galatians 5:19–20
6. Sexual Sin
Sexual immorality creates deep spiritual bondage and soul ties. Scripture repeatedly connects sexual sin with destruction and separation from God.
Any fornication, pre-marital sex, perverted sex within marriage, infidelity, pornography (including "sexual" things in movies, TV shows, and books that would not be considered pornographic by the world's standards), etc opens the door for the demonic. This is compounded by the fact that we can form soul ties with people with whom sexual activity is conducted. Anything attached to them gains access to us and vice versa.
Scripture is clear that sexual sin brings curses, destruction, and separation from the church. In 1 Corinthians 5:1-5, Paul tells the church to hand the man over to satan. Proverbs provides endless wisdom on how sexual sin brings destruction, and Deuteronomy chapter 20 discusses the curse associated with sexual immorality.
7. Fear
Fear is faith in the wrong kingdom. Any fear outside of the fear of the Lord can open the door for the enemy because it’s a sin. Fear is honestly one of the biggest and easiest ways to open a door for the enemy to attack. And a lot of times we justify our fear as wisdom or being cautious, when in reality it’s not trusting God; therefore, the enemy has gained ground in someone's life when this fear is unrepentant and becomes a driving factor.
8. Curses and Generational Patterns
Certain sins and practices can invoke curses that affect families and generations. Scripture warns that curses can have an impact if there is a cause, but a curse without a cause does not have an impact, as told in Proverbs 26:2.
“Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law.” — Deuteronomy 27:26
Genesis 9:20–25 — The curse on Canaan illustrates generational consequence.
Mark 9:14–29 — The boy afflicted by a demon since childhood shows that sometimes demonization can be there from the beginning, which points to some curse or generational pattern.
Freedom Comes Through Awareness and Obedience
This teaching is not about fear — it is about freedom. None of this is about guilt, shame, condemnation… It’s about the Lord revealing things so we can repent of any sin on our part and gain freedom from the enemy. This is also not “being religious”. It’s about being spiritually aware and understanding the enemy’s schemes so he doesn’t take advantage of you, as Paul indicates in 2 Corinthians 2:11.

Prayer: Father God, we come to you and thank you for who you are and ask that you teach us what you want us to know about demonization and how it could be occuring in our lives. Father, we ask that you give all of us the spirit of discernment and the gift of discerning a spirit so that we can really understand where the enemy may be operating in our lives and where there may be things just in our flesh that we need to deal with. Father, we know that you want us free. You want us completely free of any bondage. Jesus came and paid the price for that. So we pray that you open our spiritual eyes, that you open our hearts, allow us to see, give us discernment, and soften our hearts to be in tune with your spirit for the things that you show us. And we ask that you reveal any strongholds the enemy has on any of us, and that you lead us and guide us into the fullness of freedom. In Jesus' name. Amen.
